WHAT IS CROSSFIT??
“CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and tactical operations teams, military special operations units, champion martial artists, and hundreds of other elite and professional athletes worldwide.
Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive. Our specialty is not specializing. Combat, survival, many sports, and life reward this kind of fitness and, on average, punish the specialist.
CrossFit contends that a person is as fit as they are proficient in each of ten general physical skills: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy.” CrossFit
CONSTANTLY VARIED — Always changing the workouts, never letting your body adapt. This is why CrossFit is great for getting results. Your body never gets used to anything so you never reach those plateaus.
HIGH INTENSITY — This is where many misconceptions about CrossFit come from. Many people think intensity is screaming and yelling and looking like you are going to pop a vain in your neck. This is not intensity although it may sometimes be the result of intensity. Intensity is synonymous with power (Force multiplied by distance divided by time.) This translates into exercise by converting it to: the load, multiplied by the bar path/movement, divided by the time. In basic language we are saying power/intensity is how much weight you can move over the longest distance in the shortest amount of time, while of course maintaining proper form and technique.
FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENTS — Are movements humans were built for. Movements that are natural and safe. Movements we use in everyday life such as squating, deadlifting, pulling yourself up, etc. This is NOT standing on a Bosu ball on one leg doing bicep curls. This is NOT sitting in a machine that holds you in place while you execute a movement that isolates one muscle leaving your body unbalanced with useless strength. These are movements that promote neurological and hormonal responses, leading to better health, actual strength, actual core stability, agility, and flexibility.
CrossFit was developed by Greg Glassman for kids, adults and seniors. The first CrossFit gym was opened in 2000, nearly 15 years later it is one of the fastest growing training systems with gyms located all over the world. It utilizes different exercises to help participants achieve improved power, strength, endurance, agility, stamina and achieve maximum fitness goals. There are different exercises regularly used including running, rowing, jumping rope, weightlifting, and rope climbing. Basic weights are also used such as barbells, dumbbells, pull-up bars, kettlebells, as well as medicine balls and box jumps.
CrossFit workouts are designed to build a LEAN and conditioned body developing functional, practical muscles that burn fat. Each class provides constantly varied high intensity natural movements that work your entire body. CrossFit is aimed to increase endurance, strength, power, flexibility, coordination, and overall athleticism. There is a Workout of the Day (WOD) that is always different from the workout done the previous day to provide variation, keep members interested in coming back, and therefore create results. Classes are for ALL fitness levels led by enthusiastic instructors that motivate everyone safely, to their fullest capacity. Don’t forget, muscles are FAT BURNING ENGINES that create LEAN bodies!!
All classes are directed by a certified trainer to ensure safety and maximum results. Classes have a mix between beginners and advanced students. as participants progress at their own pace. CrossFit Rockaway Beach offers a full schedule of weekly Crossfit Classes.

Regular classes/ WOD (workout of the day)
This is where you’ll be told to do a certain number of reps of particular exercises as quickly as possible, or you’ll have a set time limit to do as many of a certain exercise as possible.
This is what you’re probably used to seeing or hearing about. A regular CrossFit class takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. Everybody starts at the same time, there are instructors walking around helping out and keeping track, and everybody is supporting each other through out their work out.
